On Wednesday’s Grill Chat, Chris Velvin and Zach Matusow shared some of their backgrounds and how their careers progressed to where they are today. The students attended our virtual Grill Chat session this week. He detailed some of the certificate programs and safety training that he has done including CSP (Certified Safety Professional), OSHA 30 (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and ASP (Associate Safety Professional). Coffee Chat:Ĭhris detailed what his job as Vice President of Production Safety for Viacom entails and some of his history of how his career progressed and got to the position he is in now. He offered advice to students and answered questions about touring, skill sets, and managing crews. Kevin detailed some of his background and how he became a Lighting Director. We were joined by Cory Simpson to present a crash course in his history with lasers, he shared some of his work designing animations and laser shows. Teams Guardians, Indy, and Tarzan presented their updated pitch decks, sizzle reels, cue sheets, and budgeting forms for feedback to polish their presentations in preparation of the Wrap Party at the end of the week. He shared personal anecdotes and answered questions from students. We were joined by Jeff Ravitz to detail some of his experience as a Lighting Designer across film, theatre, architecture, and rock and roll. We ended this session with questions for Benny.
Benny is a professional lighting programmer who speaks to his work within the industry and what his experience has been. In this session, Brian Gale introduced the class to Benny Kirkham. We looked at publications and magazines related to entertainment tech.
Casey introduced many networks for finding job opportunities and how to navigate through the job postings. In this session, we continued Tech Management with Casey Gale. He then answered questions from students. He discussed some of his experience with Theatrical Consultants and Architects designing new facilities and renovating existing facilities. We were joined by John Owens and he shared some of his history and how his current job functions. The team of panelists then took questions from students. Jess spoke about film design and programming. Martin spoke about the importance of having an Agent. Brian and Martin discussed the unions, some of the history of IATSE and USA829, and when it is right to join. We were joined by Brian Gale, Jess Baker, and Martin Carillo to talk about the transition from early career to professional.
